  3. Apple Ships Windows Client Software for AppleShare and AppleSearch

  8.     Apple Computer, Inc. today announced availability of its
  9. AppleShare and AppleSearch Client for Windows software products.
  10. The AppleShare Client for Windows, which allows Windows users to
  11. access AppleTalk-based file and print services, will be included
  12. with all of Apple's Workgroup Servers, making them a low-cost,
  13. easy-to-use cross-platform solution.  Apple also is shipping the
  14. AppleSearch Client for Windows in its text search and retrieval
  15. software package--AppleSearch v1.5.
  16.     All Workgroup server customers who purchased a Workgroup Server
  17. after January 1, 1995, along with customers of the Apple Internet
  18. Server Solution for the World Wide Web and AppleSearch v1.5, can
  19. call (800) 617-1788 to receive a free copy of the Windows client
  20. software.

  22. Significance
  23.     Both the AppleShare and AppleSearch Client for Windows software
  24. products are designed to give Windows users an inexpensive and
  25. easy way to connect to AppleTalk-based LANs with the same
  26. computing look-and-feel of standard Windows network application
  27. programs.  Both of the products provide customers in mixed
  28. workgroups--those using Apple Macintosh personal computers and
  29. Windows-based PCs--the ability to access information and work
  30. together over a network with the same ease-of-use that has always
  31. been available for Macintosh networks.  Both Windows products come
  32. with a network license that allows distribution of the Windows
  33. client software to any Windows-based PC connected to the network.
  34.     Included in the AppleShare Client for Windows product is the
  35. AppleTalk Network Protocol Stack for Windows, co-developed by
  36. Apple and Miramar Systems Inc. of Santa Barbara, California.  The
  37. AppleTalk Network Protocol Stack for Windows will enable
  38. independent software developers (ISVs) of database, e-mail,
  39. scheduling and other network services to develop cross-platform
  40. versions of their applications.

  42. Availability and Pricing
  43.     Both the AppleShare and AppleSearch Client for Windows software
  44. products are immediately available through Apple authorized
  45. resellers in the U.S.  All Workgroup server customers who
  46. purchased a Workgroup Server after January 1, 1995, along with
  47. customers of the Apple Internet Server Solution for the World Wide
  48. Web and AppleSearch v1.5, can call (800) 617-1788 to receive a
  49. free copy of the Windows client software.
  50.     The AppleShare Client for Windows is available for a suggested
  51. retail price of $199 in the U.S. AppleSearch 1.0 customers can
  52. upgrade to AppleSearch v1.5 for $99 in the U.S., which includes
  53. the AppleSearch Client for Windows. Software upgrades can also be
  54. obtained by calling (800) 769-2775 (ext. 5921).
  55.     A Software Developers Kit (SDK) is available for the AppleTalk
  56. Network Protocol Stack for Windows by contacting Miramar at (805)
  57. 966-2432.  An SDK for the AppleSearch Client for Windows is
  58. available from APDA, Apple's source for developer tools.  For a
